PRESIDENT'S NOTES for October 2018

by Juan Chavez

Our annual fundraising golf tournament originally scheduled for 15 September 2018 was as usual programmed as the main event for the month, however, Mother Nature had a different agenda. Hurricane Florence made landfall in Wilmington, NC on 14 September 2018 wreaking havoc across the Carolinas for three days.

Sadly, two of the fifty deaths so far attributed to the storm were Cape Fear Chapter members. Carl “Pat” Flanagan and his wife Trish tragically perished in a house fire the night of 14 September. It was determined that the cause of the fire was candles the Flanagan’s were using as lighting due to the loss of electrical power.

Because of Florence and its immediate aftermath, we had to postpone the tournament, not once but twice, thereby causing undue turmoil. Despite all the adversity, we managed to get the tournament in on the 29th and it was an incredible success. As a tribute to the Flanagan’s, the tournament was dedicated to their memory.

Credit for the tournament’s success goes to Tammy Beshlin, our Tournament Director, and her Golf Tournament Committee volunteers: Tim and Peggy Atkinson, Maria Chavez, Maureen Dadek, Stan Dodson, Dennis Franken, Bob and Nancy Garman, Don Gersh, Ralph Hinrichs, Carol Ivey, Art and Argie Rodriguez, Claudie Wallen, Caitlyn Wallen, Marty Williams; and, the Meinhardt’s – Mary, Katrina, Hans & Susan; another stellar performance by a top-notch team.

Our annual membership meeting on 16 November 2018 is our next chapter event and the last for 2018. It will be a plate dinner held in the Lafayette Room of the Iron Mike Conference Center starting with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 1700 hours. The business part of the agenda will include presentation of a slate of candidates for election to chapter president and five other elective positions on the executive board for the 2-year term starting January 2019; a vote on the dues structure for 2019; and, addition of another 5-star medallion to our colors. This is a very important meeting that all members should endeavor to attend.

The featured speaker for the evening will be North Carolina Representative William “Billy” O. Richardson, District 44; the 82nd Airborne Division “All American Chorus” will perform for our entertainment pleasure. It promises to be an enjoyable and memorable affair; save the date.
